What is PE.png

A high-quality physical education curriculum inspires all pupils to succeed and excel in competitive sport and other physically-demanding activities.

It should provide opportunities for pupils to become physically confident in a way which supports their health and fitness.

Opportunities to compete in sport and other activities build character and help to embed values such as fairness and respect.

PE at Dale Community Primary School aims to develop a fun, high quality PE curriculum that inspires all pupils to develop their knowledge, skills and vocabulary in a broad range of sporting activities. We will provide opportunities for all pupils to become competent and confident movers by the end of KS2, ready for their transition to KS3.

This will also support and encourage a healthy lifestyle, with positive choices that are established throughout their childhood. Whilst implementing a broad and balanced curriculum through cross-curricular link opportunities, pupils will build upon skills learned throughout the years. With transitions through fundamental movement skills in Early Years and KS1, to simple sporting activities in lower KS2.

More sport specific links are then made in upper KS2 to enhance children’s PE further.

You will be:

  • developing competence to excel in a broad range of physical activities

  • physically active for sustained periods of time

  • engaging in competitive sports and activities

  • taught how to lead healthy, active lives.

PE at Dale Community primary School provides challenging and enjoyable learning through a range of sporting activities including; invasion games, net & wall games, strike and field games, gymnastics, dance, swimming and outdoor & adventure activities.

The long term plan sets out the PE units which are to be taught throughout the year and ensures that the requirements of the National Curriculum are fully met.

Pupils participate in a two hours of high quality PE lesson each week, covering the disciplines on the curriculum map. In addition, children are encouraged to participate in the varied range of extra-curricular activities. Lunch time sports and after school sport clubs are previsions that children have access to every day of the week.

Children are invited to attend competitive sporting events through Derby County Community Trust as well as our own league games within the local area. This is an inclusive approach which endeavours to encourage not only physical development but also mental well-being. These events also develop teamwork and leadership skills and are very much enjoyed by the children.

By the end of year 6, children develop into sporting role models for the younger children, and are able to assist with lunch-time activities, our annual Sports days and any other Sporting activities.

Children in Year 3 swim for 13 weeks, each of them taking part in an hour session with two qualified members of the sports team in the pool.

We help motivate children to participate in a variety of sports through quality teaching that is engaging and fun. From our lessons, our children learn to take responsibility for their own health and fitness, many of whom also enjoy the success of competitive sports. We equip our children with the necessary skills and a love for sport. They will hopefully grow up to live happy and healthy lives utilising the skills and knowledge acquired through PE.

By the end of each key stage, pupils are expected to know, apply and understand the matters, skills and processes specified in the relevant programme of study. To view the full programme, please click on the progression document above.
